Warning Signs of A Roof Leak

Not every roof leak is as obvious as an enormous tree crashing through your roof during a thunderstorm.  In fact, most are far slower and more subtle, which means it can often occur without homeowners even noticing.  If you’ve been wondering how you can tell if your roof is leaking before the damage is significant, take a look at our blog for the signs you should be looking out for!

Curling Shingles

One of the first signs that your roof is accruing water damage is when you see your roof’s shingles curling up at the edges. Curling shingles indicates that they have been absorbing water which prevents the shingles from layering over one another and forming a sheet of protection.  Curling shingles are a warning sign that your roof may be accumulating water damage.

Damaged Flashing

This can be very difficult to see if you’re not on top of your roof, but any opening in your roof requires flashing to prevent moisture damage.  However, flashing can crack over time, which will lead to moisture leaking in around your roof vents or chimney. Be sure to periodically examine your home’s flashing to ensure that it is still in good condition.

Missing/Broken Shingles

While curling shingles are a sign that your roof deck could be facing water damage, missing or broken shingles is a clear indication.  Your shingles are your home’s main defense against the elements, so any time you see missing shingles, you should assume that your home is dealing with moisture problems and take precautions. If you see that your home is missing shingles, be sure to have your roof inspected and shingles replaced as soon as possible to prevent significant damage from occurring.

Moss/Algae Growth

This one can be a bit more difficult to identify, but moss or algae growth can certainly be a sign that your home’s roof is in need of replacing.  Moss and algae both grow in damp, shady areas, which means if you have them growing on your roof, you likely have a significant amount of moisture sitting on your roof. If left alone, moss or algae can damage your shingles and roof deck, particularly in the winter when the moisture freezes which can significantly damage your shingles.
