Proper Gutter Maintenance

Your home’s gutters are one of the most important parts of your roofing system. They serve the essential function of helping to route water away from your roof and home, helping to keep it protected from water damage, which can be extremely destructive to your home. With that being said, it is important to keep up with proper gutter maintenance in order to ensure that your home’s gutters are kept in good repair and working order. If you’re interested in learning more about the gutter maintenance you should be doing, take a look at our blog for more information!

When Should I Clean My Gutter System

Your gutter system needs to be kept in working order to keep your home protected from water damage. If your gutter system is clogged and won’t drain properly, water will back up and overflow out of the system, causing it to both drain over the edge of the system and damage your flowerbeds or home’s foundation, or to seep under your starter shingles and into your fascia & soffit boards. If you find that your gutter system isn’t draining, you will need to clear the system of debris to ensure that everything is working. Expect that you will need to clean the system at least once a year in the fall or spring, possibly more if you live in a heavily wooded area. Installing gutter guards can help to reduce the amount of gutter maintenance you’ll need each year.

Signs My Gutters Need To Be Replaced

While most gutter issues can be alleviated with proper maintenance, it is also important to keep track of the signs that your gutters are failing beyond being full of debris.

Your gutter system can become damaged in a variety of ways, most of which are related to an abundance of water & moisture in the system that causes the system to decay. This can cause damage to the system that reduces its structural integrity.

Your gutter system can begin to buckle under the weight of excessive water and debris in the system, causing the system to bend and leak. In addition to the individual gutter pieces detaching from one another due to the weight of the system, if water has been overflowing out of the system, it may also rot the fascia boards your gutters are attached too, which can cause them to pull away from your home. If you notice that your gutter system is bending or pulling away from your home, you will need to have it repaired and replaced immediately!
