Ice dams form when warmth from inside the home melts the bottom layer of snow on the roof, sending water trickling down to the edge. Exposed to frigid air, it immediately refreezes, clogging gutters and causing the water behind it to pool up and find a path into the home below, usually through the shingles. Ice dams are more common in older or poorly insulated homes and those with low-pitch roofs. But even in newer homes, a new roof can leak if water runs backward in between the shingles. This problem is resolved by using a high quality underlayment below the actual shingles.
In cold weather, warm air generated by laundry, showers, dish washing and cooking can linger in the house and cause moisture build-up. In the summer, heat build-up encourages premature aging and cracking of wood and roofing materials. Unwanted heat can also transfer back down into living areas, reducing energy efficiency.
The only way to combat these problems is with a balanced ventilation system. In a balanced system, wind blowing over the ridge creates a negative pressure that draws the warmer air out of the attic. Replacement air enters through the undereave or soffit vents, bathes the underside of the roof, and exits at the ridge cap through ridge vents, roof vents or gable vents. Even with no wind, the natural convection action of rising warm air maintains a continuous airflow along the underside of the roof. It’s a system that works year ’round with no moving parts or energy consumption.

A rain gutter (also known as eavestrough, guttering or just gutter) is a narrow channel, or trough, forming the component of a roof system which collects and diverts rainwater shed by the roof. In many buildings, the purpose of this diversion is to prevent drips off the roof edges. These drips can cause structural damage over time to the walls or the foundation of a building. However, in others the purpose is also to harvest rainwater, for household or garden use.
Rain gutter can be constructed from a variety of materials, including galvanized or painted steel, copper, PVC and other plastics, concrete, and stone.
Water collected by a rain gutter is fed, usually via a downpipe, to a collection system, either a rainwater tank or a stormwater main or sewer main. In some locations where collection to a main is not feasible, the water is dispersed into stormwater pits.
Different styles of gutter are available to suit the design of the roof, the building method and the desired appearance. Exposed rain gutter is available in a variety of profiles to suit the appearance of the building. Common exposed rain gutter is fixed to the fascia board, which in turn is fixed to the ends of the rafters. A fascia gutter incorporates a rain gutter with a fascia. Box gutter is a deep gutter which is concealed within the structure of the roof. A box gutter is usually applied when the rainwater is to be collected from points within the boundary walls of the building. Water collected by a box gutter is fed to the downpipe via a rainhead.
